What’s Actually Worth the Money and What You Can Skip

When we first learned American mahjong, we did what so many new players do.

We immediately wanted to buy all the things.

And because we love nothing more than a good product-research rabbit hole, we started comparing tile sets, mats, racks, bags, and accessories from just about every mahjong brand we could find.

One name kept coming up again and again: Oh My Mahjong.

Then we saw the prices.

We get it. Oh My Mahjong is not inexpensive, and when you’re brand new to the game, spending several hundred dollars on a set of mahjong tiles can feel a little wild.

Fast-forward to now, and we own mahjong products from many of the major brands on the market. We also teach American mahjong regularly, which means our tiles, mats, and accessories get a lot more use than they would in a typical home game.

Is Oh My Mahjong Worth the Money?

Our answer is:

It depends on what you’re buying.

You absolutely do not need an expensive mahjong set to learn how to play or enjoy the game.

But if you’re ready to invest in pieces you’ll use frequently, want something beautiful enough to leave out for game night, or are shopping for a special mahjong gift, there are several Oh My Mahjong products that we think genuinely earn their premium price tag.

There are also a few where we think you can get the same basic functionality elsewhere for less.

Here’s where we’d spend our money.

1. Oh My Mahjong Tiles

Our Verdict: Absolutely Worth It

Let’s start with the product that made us Oh My Mahjong fans in the first place: the tiles.

We own tiles from many different mahjong brands, but our Oh My Mahjong sets continue to be some of our favorite tiles to both teach with and play with.

Why We Love Them

First, they’re beautiful.

The color combinations, layered acrylic, and tiny design details are incredibly well thought out. Even the different colored layers of the tiles coordinate with the artwork on the faces.

But as mahjong instructors, what matters to us even more is how easy the tiles are to read.

A beautiful mahjong tile isn’t nearly as useful to us if a beginner can’t tell what she’s looking at.

For the most part, Oh My Mahjong does a great job of keeping its tile designs connected to traditional mahjong imagery.

Bams still look like bamboo.

Craks still make the Chinese characters recognizable.

Dots are usually, well... dots.

And the numbers are clearly positioned in a consistent location, which makes it much easier for a brand-new player to quickly distinguish something like a 5 Bam from a 6 Bam.

That may sound like a small detail until you’re sitting beside someone playing her very first game.

We have access to plenty of tile sets when we teach, and we still go back to our Oh My Mahjong tiles time and time again.

Who We’d Recommend Them For

If you’re brand new and aren’t sure whether mahjong will become your thing, you certainly don’t have to begin with a premium tile set.

But if you already know you love the game and want to invest in a beautiful set you’ll use for years, Oh My Mahjong tiles are one of the places we’d be most comfortable spending the extra money.

Mahjong Co. tile sets come in at a much lower price point while still giving you the fun colors and modern look that probably made you want a pretty mahjong set in the first place.

They do have some less-luxe details compared with Oh My Mahjong. For example, some Mahjong Co. tiles use two layers of acrylic instead of the four-layer construction you’ll find on many Oh My Mahjong sets.

But for a first set?

We think they’re a fantastic option.

2. Oh My Mahjong Mats

Our Verdict: Five Stars

People’s Choice Award. Put them in the Hall of Fame.

We have mahjong mats from a lot of brands.

The Oh My Mahjong mats are still some of our absolute favorites.

The printing is vibrant, the designs are beautiful, and most importantly for us, they hold up to real life.

And when we say real life, we mean a whole lot of people playing mahjong around food and drinks.

We teach many of our classes at a local brewery, so our mats have been spilled on, shuffled on, transported, folded, unfolded, and generally put through far more abuse than a normal mahjong mat probably experiences.

We’ve washed and dried ours repeatedly, and they have come out looking great.

That alone earns major points from us.

3. The Way Oh My Mahjong Tiles and Mats Coordinate

Our Verdict: One of the Most Underrated Reasons to Buy Oh My Mahjong

This technically isn’t one individual product, but it’s one of our favorite things about the brand.

Their collections coordinate beautifully.

You can put the same set of tiles on several completely different mats and somehow each combination looks intentional.

And here’s one of our favorite mahjong hosting tricks:

Use your everyday tile set with a seasonal or holiday mat.

BOOM.

You suddenly have a perfectly coordinated holiday mahjong table without buying an entirely new set of holiday tiles.

If you’re someone who likes creating a pretty table almost as much as you like playing the game, this is a big part of the appeal.

4. Oh My Mahjong Debutante Tile Set

Our Verdict: One of Our Favorite Travel Mahjong Sets

The Debutante tiles are marketed toward kids, and yes, they’re great for younger players.

But that’s actually not our favorite way to use them.

We love them as a travel mahjong set.

The tiles are lightweight and portable without being so tiny that they’re difficult to see or play with.

That’s a big distinction because some travel mahjong sets solve the portability problem by making everything so miniature that they simply aren’t that enjoyable to actually use.

The Debutante tiles still feel substantial enough for a real game, they’re easy to read, and bonus points, they’re adorable.

We purchased ours when the sets originally came with wooden racks. The racks were beautiful, but they added quite a bit of weight when we traveled.

Oh My Mahjong has since changed the set to lighter-weight racks, which makes the set even easier to transport.

The One Thing We’d Change

We wish the set included a mat.

You can definitely order one of the coordinating travel mats separately, but when we’re creating our ideal grab-it-and-go travel setup, we’d love having everything together in one package.

That’s a relatively small complaint, though.

For someone who travels frequently, takes mahjong to the lake or beach, or just wants a lighter-weight set to carry around, the Debutante is one of the Oh My Mahjong products we’d absolutely consider.

5. Oh My Mahjong Mat Storage Bag

Our Verdict: Surprisingly Useful and Worth the Splurge for Serious Mahjong Haulers

This may be the least glamorous recommendation on this list, but ours gets a workout.

We can fit approximately:

• Two full sets of mahjong tiles

• Two mahjong mats

• Two sets of racks

• Two tablecloths

inside one bag.

For us as instructors, that’s incredibly useful.

The bag itself feels substantial and well made, and the colors and coordinating printed interiors make something purely functional feel a lot prettier.

One Very Specific Word of Advice

If you load yours down the way we load ours down, use both straps when picking it up.

Sydney learned this particular lesson the hard way by trying to lift an extremely heavy, completely stuffed bag from one strap.

That one is on us, not the bag.

Even the world’s best tote bag doesn’t need to be subjected to that kind of engineering experiment.

For a casual player carrying one set from house to house, this probably isn’t a must-buy.

For teachers, event hosts, or the friend who somehow transports half of a mahjong room every time she plays, it’s fantastic.

What About the Other Oh My Mahjong Accessories?

This is where we’re going to be a little pickier.

Because while there are several Oh My Mahjong products we would happily purchase again, we don’t think you need to buy every accessory from the same brand.

Oh My Mahjong Rack Storage Bags

Our Verdict: Very Nice, But Not a Must-Have

The rack bags are well designed.

We especially like that the racks sit in their own protected compartments, and as usual, Oh My Mahjong does a great job with the colors and prints.

But purely from a functionality standpoint, there are less expensive rack bags on the market that accomplish the same basic job.

If matching accessories and coordinated collections are important to you, you’ll probably love them.

If your main goal is simply protecting your racks, we’d compare your options before spending the extra money.

Oh My Mahjong Racks

Our Verdict: Good Product, But Personal Preference Matters

We own several sets of Oh My Mahjong racks.

They just don’t get nearly as much use in our games because we personally prefer magnetic racks over hinged racks.

That isn’t a quality issue.

It’s purely a playing preference.

This is a good example of something we’d recommend trying before assuming the most expensive option is automatically going to be your favorite.

Oh My Mahjong Plastic Tile Bags

Our Verdict: They Do the Job, But We’d Probably Pass

We have several of the plastic tile bags that came with our Mahji Mentor kits.

They’re good.

They work.

We don’t have a quality complaint.

We just think they’re expensive for what they are.

If we were building our mahjong collection from scratch and deciding where to put our money, we’d put those dollars toward the tiles or mats first.

If We Were Starting Our Mahjong Collection Over Again

If we had to prioritize our Oh My Mahjong purchases, here’s where our money would go.

First: Tiles

Beautiful, easy to read, and some of our favorites for actually playing and teaching.

Second: Mats

Great quality, gorgeous designs, and proven durability in our classes.

Third: Debutante Set

Especially if you travel frequently or want something lighter and easier to transport.

Fourth: Mat Storage Bag

A fantastic investment if you’re carrying multiple sets or hosting and teaching regularly.

The other accessories?

Some are wonderful, but we’d buy them based on your personal preferences rather than feeling like you need the entire matching collection.

Final Verdict: Is Oh My Mahjong Worth It?

Oh My Mahjong is a premium mahjong brand, and its prices reflect that.

We don’t think every player needs to buy the most expensive version of every accessory.

But after teaching and playing with products from many different mahjong brands, there is a reason our Oh My Mahjong tiles and mats continue to be among the products we reach for most often.

For us, that’s the best test of whether something was worth the money.

Not whether it looked pretty when we opened the box.

Whether we’re still choosing it when we have ten other options sitting beside it.
