It’s probably not what you are thinking.
They are looking for perfect patterns, forcing pretty hands, and trying to make every rack fit into something that feels neat and obvious. But one of the most powerful hands on the entire card is hiding in a section a lot of players skip right past: Quints.
We know. The second you see the word “Quints,” it is easy to panic a little. Five of a kind sounds hard. It sounds like you need a rack full of jokers. It sounds like one of those hands you only play when the Mahjong gods personally deliver it to you.
But when you look past the label and actually do the math, the most statistically dominant hand on the 2026 NMJL card is Quints, Line 3:

Any 2 numbers, any 1 suit with opposite dragons
Let’s take a look at what the parenthetical is actually saying.
Any two numbers.
Any one suit.
Opposite dragons.
That flexibility is what makes this hand so powerful.
This one line creates 216 possible combinations, which means it makes up roughly 20% of all playable hands on the 2026 card. That is wild for one single line.
Most players see this hand and think, “There is no way I am getting five of one number and five of another.”
But that is not really the strategy.
You are not waiting for perfection. You are looking for a strong starting point. If your rack is already leaning heavily into one suit, especially if you have multiples of two different numbers, this line deserves a second look.
From there, the plan is simple.
Pick your two strongest numbers. Commit to one suit. Start gathering multiples of an opposing suit’s dragons. And let your jokers do the work they were meant to do.
No sequence required. No perfect pattern required. No need for the numbers to “make sense” together.
That is the beauty of it.
The hands that look the hardest are not always the hands with the worst odds. Sometimes the intimidating section is hiding the most flexible path on the card.
So before you skip over a line that looks too difficult, read the parenthetical.
