Most American mahjong players use the National Mah Jongg League card, which is released every spring and changes year to year. It is the standard for nearly every game you will play once you are out in the world.
But the NMJL card has over a thousand possible hands. For a brand new player, opening it for the first time can feel like being handed a menu in a language you have never seen. That is not the best place to start.
In Mahjong 101, we teach using our own simplified class card. It has fewer hands, cleaner categories, and is designed specifically to help you learn how the game works, how to read a line, and how to build a strategy, without the overwhelm of every option at once.
One rule that matters: every player at the table must be using the same card. As long as everyone agrees on which card you are playing with, you can use any card you like. Our class card is a great way to keep practicing after Mahjong 101 before you feel ready to move to the full NMJL card.
