Mahjong 102 is designed for players who have completed our Mahjong 101 class or have equivalent experience. You should be comfortable with the Charleston, reading the NMJL card, and playing a full hand before you join us for 102.

What we cover in 102

The rules are the foundation. Strategy is what makes the game worth playing. In this class, we get into the decisions that actually shape your results at the table.

  • How to read your starting hand faster
  • Charleston strategy and what to keep
  • When to pivot your hand mid-game
  • How to read what others are building
  • Defensive play and when to use it
  • Understanding the 2026 NMJL card sections
  • Which hands appear most often and why
  • How to think several tiles ahead

Who this is for

This class is for players who have gotten past the basics but still feel like the game is mostly guesswork. If you can play a hand but you are not sure you are making good decisions, this is where to come next.

It is also great for players who took 101 a while ago and want a refresher that pushes them further than where they started.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need to take 101 first?
Not necessarily ours specifically, but you do need a solid foundation before 102 is useful. If you have played regularly and feel comfortable with the basic flow of the game, you will likely be fine. When you fill out the form, just tell us where you are and we can help you decide.
Is this about the 2026 NMJL card?
Yes. Strategy instruction is always built around the current year's NMJL card, so what we teach is directly applicable to what you're playing right now.
Will we actually play during class?
Yes. We use live hands and real game situations to illustrate every concept we cover. You will spend time at the table, not just listening to us talk about it.
What if I took 101 a long time ago?
We will do a quick review at the start so everyone is on the same page before we move into strategy. If it has been more than a year since you played regularly, just mention that in your inquiry and we can talk through whether a refresher might help first.
